OpenBPEL is an open source web services management system and provides an infrastructure for deploying, executing and managing BPEL4WS processes.

OpenBPEL allows users to set up a complete network of web service-enabled applications and to orchestrate business processes written in IBM and Microsoft’s Business Process Execution Language For Web Services (BPEL4WS).

Business processes, expressed in BPEL4WS (version 1.1), and webservices descriptors, expressed in WSDL, serve as a input for the OpenBPEL server. With a user-friendly management webapplication a web service developer can deploy BPEL-files and create a new web service that initiates the BPEL business process. This management webapplication also provides a visualization of the execution of a business process. A business manager can use this tool to view the progress of execution and all information that is being transferred (in XML/SOAP messages) between all participating applications.

To ensure the integrity of running processes, OpenBPEL maintains the state, transferred messages, etc. of a BPEL process instance in audit documents and log files, which can be reloaded into the OpenBPEL server, after a system pause or system failure.

OpenBPEL is developed in Java, using the open source Eclipse software development kit. The management webapplication is built on PHP+MySQL (which can be run on Apache or IIS).

This project is an initiative of the Rob Oorlog and Erwin Snijders (ROES WebDevelopment), in a joint effort with the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands).

Due to several circumstances, the OpenBPEL project was set on hold since December 2003. In September 2004 the project was restarted. We hope to provide a first prototype version at the end of September.

Currently this website is under construction. Please come back soon.
